Summer time is when people often travel to visit attractions that are further from home. When autumn arrives, school and work schedules often get busier, so here are reminders about entertaining ways to spend time while staying closer to home.
Main Street Children’s Museum
This museum offers educational activities and creative play opportunities for kids aged one to six years old. The museum’s artwork is based on the illustrations of longtime Rock Hill resident Vernon Grant, who created Snap, Crackle and Pop for Kellogg’s Rice Krispies cereal and illustrated many children’s nursery rhymes. Children can explore a treehouse, a magic ship and a giant pumpkin while building important cognitive and motor skills. Have fun at 133 E. Main Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
Five and Dine
Five and Dine offers American classics made from scratch, including old-fashioned sodas and egg creams. Aside from the tasty American-style cuisine, Five and Dine also offers a taste of history. The restaurant is located on the site of an iconic Civil Rights Movement sit-in, in which nine local black men sat at a whites-only lunch counter and refused to leave. The Five and Dine honors the protestors by using the original lunch counter where the sit-in took place and engraving the names of the protestors on the stools. Enjoy a delicious meal at a historic location at 135 E. Main Street #101, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
Glencairn Garden
Glencairn Garden is a small yet beautiful park in one of Rock Hill’s historic residential neighborhoods. The garden features 11 acres of trees, flowers, fountains and carefully landscaped lawns. The park is most colorful in late March and early April, but the variety of azaleas, camellias, dogwoods, wisteria, and other plants ensure blooms in any season. Take a stroll at 725 Crest Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
Catawba Cultural Center
If you enjoy learning about history, visit the Catawba Cultural Center to discover the culture and history of the Catawba Indian nation. The center aims to preserve and promote the culture of the Catawba tribe, who have been living in the area around Rock Hill for hundreds of years. Look through the center’s exhibits, historical archives, and traditional crafts to gain a deeper understanding of Rock Hill’s Native American history at 1536 Tom Steven Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
Museum of York County
If the natural sciences suit you better, check out the Museum of York County to learn about biology, natural history and astronomy. The Naturalist Center has 1,500 specimens, skins, skulls, rocks, minerals and fossils that you can examine. The exhibit on Carolina Piedmont Hall’s Landscapes and Lifeways compares the Piedmont’s present landscape to what it looked like in the 1400s, before the arrival of Europeans. Settlemyre Planetarium gives you the chance to see the current position of the moon and stars, learn to identify constellations, and get an in-depth glimpse of the other planets in our solar system. Visit the museum at 4621 Mt. Gallant Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
